Behind the brush: Nuriatoll talks about her collaboration with BGaming
To welcome 2025, BGaming is introducing our latest artistic collaboration ahead of ICE Barcelona. This marks the 9th chapter of our “When Art Meets Gaming” project — a creative initiative that shines a spotlight on local artists from the host cities of major iGaming events.
This time, we’re teaming up with Barcelona-based street artist Nuriatoll, known for her bold graphic illustrations and love of vibrant colors. With a career spanning collaborations with big names like Adidas, Seat, and Johnny Walker, she brings her unique artistic flair to everything she touches. Her style isn’t just eye-catching — it’s thought-provoking, often exploring deeper societal themes.
We had the chance to chat with Nuriatoll about her creative journey, her approach to this collaboration, and how she brought her artistic vision to the world of gaming. Read on to find out what she had to say!
1. Can you tell us about your artistic journey and what drew you to the world of street art?
My childhood memories are filled with drawing and painting, and I have always felt closely connected to the world of art. I studied graphic design and worked for several years at a packaging company.
Although I loved what I was doing, my focus had been heavily on digital design, and I began to feel an urge to return to more hands-on work.
In 2014, I discovered that Barcelona had walls where painting was legally permitted, so I decided to experiment with spray paint, a technique I had never tried before. I fell in love with working on large formats and painting outdoors, and it quickly became a weekend passion. Little by little, work proposals began coming my way.
Eventually, I left my job as a designer, and now I am incredibly happy dedicating myself entirely to murals and illustration.
2. What would you say is your source of inspiration?
My inspiration comes from everything around me, especially animals and plants.
We live in big, gray cities, and I’ve always loved the idea of bringing small pieces of nature into the urban environment. It’s as if the murals serve as windows to other worlds amidst the chaos of daily life.
3. What attracted you to BGaming's “When Art Meets Gaming” project?
It seemed like a different kind of proposal from what I usually receive, and that’s always something fun. Stepping out of your comfort zone and seeing where it takes you is always worthwhile. In these cases, the result often turns out much better than what you initially imagined! (And if not, you’re sure to learn something valuable along the way).
Also, I think it’s a great idea to bring the world of street art closer to other disciplines (and vice versa). We often live in our own bubbles without considering what happens outside them, and I believe that, especially in creative disciplines, this is a mistake.
4. Could you describe your process for reimagining the game characters for BGaming? What was your approach to merging your artistic style with the existing game aesthetics?
The process has been similar to when I draw animals for my murals, for example. The most important thing for me is to identify the features that make the character recognizable and focus on preserving them.
Many times, I don’t add eyes, so I concentrate on highlighting other traits and finding ways to make them as expressive as possible.
In general, I’ve aimed to maintain the defining elements and proportions while playing with geometry, lines, and creating a slightly more graphic version.
5. Working with major brands on diverse projects, how do you ensure that your artistic identity remains intact while meeting commercial expectations?
For me, maintaining a personal style and creating a unique identity has always been very important. In the beginning, it was more challenging, and I had to turn down many opportunities to stay true to myself and remain consistent with the universe I was building.
Now I see that initial effort was absolutely worth it, as the brands that contact me today already expect that from me, and their proposals tend to align very well with what I do.
I always strive to adapt to each project and offer something distinct and unique every time, while staying true to myself and working in a way that feels authentic. That's how the best results come to life!
6. Did you face any challenges while working on the game character designs, and which character is your favorite?
Without a doubt, Elvis Frog! At first, I was really surprised by this combination. I thought I wouldn’t be able to adapt the character to my style without losing the essence of the original (after all, we’re talking about Elvis!). However, I had a lot of fun working on it, and I’m really happy with the result.
In general, the biggest challenge is not creating characters from scratch. Instead, it’s working with characters that already exist. Even though you add your personal touch, they still have to maintain their ‘soul.’
7. To sum up, how would you describe your collaboration with BGaming in three words?
Challenging, different, and fun!
